Dr. Ita Fitzgerald is an Advanced Specialist Pharmacist in Mental Health at St Patrick’s Mental Health Services, Dublin, where she works across both clinical practice and research leadership. Ita has worked in psychiatry since qualifying as a pharmacist, with clinical experience spanning mood disorders, psychosis, old age psychiatry, and substance misuse. She completed advanced credentialing with the College of Mental Health Pharmacy (UK), recognising specialist expertise in psychiatric pharmacy practice. Ita holds an MSc in Clinical Pharmacy and a PhD in Medicine and Health from University College Cork (UCC). Her doctoral research focused on improving obesity management within psychiatric settings, particularly antipsychotic-associated weight gain and metabolic health. Ita’s wider research interests include psychopharmacology, pharmacoepidemiology, shared decision-making, and improving evidence-based prescribing in mental health care. Ita has published in leading psychiatry journals, presented at international conferences, contributed to national guideline development, and teaches undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacists across Ireland.
